biography

Dr. Ryohei Sasaki has become a Professor, Division of Radiation Oncology, Kobe University, Japan, since October 2012, and treats more than 500 patients every year. He is also a director of JASTRO since 2014. His major role in JASTRO is announced as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Radiation Research.

Sasaki’s experience covers various sources of radiotherapy including particle beams, and has advocated a novel concept using originally invented bio-absorbable spacer, named Space-Making Particle Therapy (SMPT). In Japan, the novel strategy has been approved and covered by health insurance, and more than 400 patients were safely treated with SMPT since 2019. It changes the impossible situation to possible curative treatment.

Dr. Sasaki is a principle investigator for development of space-making particle therapy using a bioabsorbable spacer and a winner of the Awards for Science and Technology (Development Category), from the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2024. Dr. Sasaki has been a board member of Japanese Society of Radiation Oncology (JASTRO) since 2006. Also, he has been an active reviewer of Red J.
