location

Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster (KBIC)

As one of Japan's largest biomedical clusters, this advanced hub integrates approximately 370 medical, research, and industry institutions.
Driving integrated progress from research to commercialization across diverse fields—including regenerative medicine, medical devices, drug discovery, and digital health—to generate world-class medical innovation.

KBIC in Numbers

370 +Institutions

Medical and bio-related companies, universities, research institutes, and hospitals

12,000 +Professionals

A concentration of researchers, physicians, engineers, and entrepreneurs in the medical and bio sectors

300 +Projects

Numerous proven track records advancing through validation, clinical trials, and commercialization

4 Core Focus Areas

Cross-disciplinary approaches spanning regenerative medicine, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, and digital health

1

City-Scale Testing and Validation

The greatest advantage of KBIC is that the city itself—not just isolated research facilities or hospitals—serves as a comprehensive testing and validation ground.

With research centers, hospitals, and corporations co-located in the same area, ideas born in the lab can immediately transition to validation and clinical phases.
The ability to seamlessly design the entire workflow—from Proof of Concept (PoC) and pilot testing to clinical trials and social implementation—provides a immense advantage for medical startups.

Furthermore, the close proximity allows for daily discussions with physicians and researchers, accelerating development and enhancing validation accuracy. We provide a city-scale environment designed to move beyond theoretical studies—testing, refining, and advancing solutions directly in the field.

2

Leveraging the Supercomputer Fugaku

The supercomputer Fugaku, successor to the K computer, is housed at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science on Port Island and continues to demonstrate world-class performance in the latest global rankings.

It is utilized across various fields such as drug discovery and disaster prevention, and contributed significantly to COVID-19 countermeasures through advanced viral droplet simulations.

3

Next Steps: A Global Perspective

For medical startups to achieve sustainable growth, they must be designed for global expansion from day one, rather than focusing solely on the domestic market.

At KBIC, startups can access a world-class development and validation environment through international joint research and partnerships with overseas institutions.
With accumulated expertise tailored to international clinical trials and global regulatory compliance, outcomes achieved in domestic validations can smoothly bridge into the next target markets.

Additionally, an environment gathering multinational researchers and corporations naturally cultivates the perspective needed to refine products to global standards. The technology and track record built here will serve as a solid foundation for the next stage of growth.
