On November 18, 2024, the 5th Emergence Conference was held at Kobe University Shinryoku Kaikan Memorial Hall.

This conference was organized with the aim of inviting leading researchers in Japan to present their highly original research findings, thereby gaining insight into the latest research trends, identifying novel perspectives including clinical applications, and creating opportunities for new collaborative research. The theme of the 5th conference was “Frontiers in Bioimaging: Novel Technological Developments and Biological Applications.” The focus was placed on the rapidly advancing field of bioimaging, which plays a pivotal role in visualizing biological structures and life phenomena, driving innovation across a wide spectrum from basic biological and medical research to clinical applications.

The conference commenced with opening remarks and a mini-lecture titled “Frontiers in Bioimaging Research” by Professor Junichi Kikuta (Department of Immunology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe University), who also served as the organizer. He presented an overview of the current landscape and future prospects of bioimaging research.

Following this, a series of cutting-edge lectures were delivered:

  • Prof. Hiroshi Yukawa (Institute of Quantum Chemical Innovation, Nagoya University) introduced “Advanced Imaging Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Using Nano Quantum Sensors.”
  • Prof. Keisuke Goda (Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo) delivered a unique presentation titled “Where is Wally in the Cells?” introducing advanced techniques for imaging intracellular structures.
  • Assoc. Prof. Kohei Otomo (Graduate School of Medicine, Juntendo University) discussed “Novel 3D Fluorescence Microscopy to Visualize Internal Microstructures of Biological Tissues.”
  • Prof. Moritoshi Sato (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo) explained cutting-edge techniques such as optogenetics under the theme “Manipulating Biological Processes by Light.”
  • In the latter half of the program:

  • Assoc. Prof. Ritsuko Morita (Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, Osaka University) presented “Single-Cell Resolution Live Imaging of Skin and Hair Follicles.”
  • Prof. Yusuke Oba (Faculty of Medicine, Hokkaido University) spoke on “Clinical Application of Bioimaging Technique.”
  • Finally, a special lecture was given by Prof. Kenji Nagai (Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University) titled “Introduction to the Quest for ‘Outliers’ – Development of the Trans-Scale Scope and Its Application to Life Science Research,” highlighting a revolutionary new microscopy technology and its potential to transform life sciences.

Throughout the conference, lively discussions and exchanges of ideas took place from multiple perspectives, ranging from fundamental bioimaging technologies to their clinical applications. We are pleased to report that the objectives of this year’s conference were successfully achieved.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the speakers, participants, and everyone involved in making this conference a success.
