The key to understanding disorders of the mind lies in a tiny relay point called the synapse.
In 2026, the Department of Pharmacology at Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine took a new step forward.
Using super-resolution imaging and molecular biology, we are decoding the brain's "blueprint."
Using super-resolution microscopy and molecular biology as our tools, we conduct basic research aimed at elucidating the mechanisms behind disorders of the mind and contributing to drug discovery.
We visualize the fine structure of synapses — invisible under conventional fluorescence microscopy — using super-resolution STED microscopy, capturing where and how proteins are distributed within brain tissue at unprecedented resolution.
Using genetically modified mice related to schizophrenia, dementia, autism spectrum disorder, and other conditions, we analyze abnormalities at the synaptic level, aiming to elucidate disease mechanisms and discover drug candidates.
Many of the proteins that make up synapses are degraded after being ubiquitinated. We use biochemical approaches to reveal how this regulatory mechanism affects the number and shape of synapses, as well as cognitive function.
You might picture research as something difficult. But if you build a solid foundation in experimental technique and the ability to see the big picture in your data while you're young, research becomes something you can truly enjoy from the heart. You only get one life — don't give in to peer pressure, and follow the path you believe is right.
We have carried out collaborative research with institutions around the world, particularly in Europe. Students and graduate students in our lab also have opportunities to visit and conduct research at these institutions.
We will regularly update this section with the latest news from the lab.
The Department of Pharmacology at Kobe University is looking for people to join us in tackling the mysteries of the brain. Prior research experience is not required — please feel free to reach out.
