Professor’s Greetings
Akiharu Kubo, MD, PhD
The Division of Dermatology, Department of Internal Related, Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine, has a long history dating back to 1926, when the Department of Dermatology was established at Hyogo Prefectural Kobe Hospital, the parent of Kobe University Hospital.
Through the fusion of clinical and basic research, I would like to share my experience in analyzing the mechanism of skin biology and the pathogenesis of various skin diseases and skin symptoms, cultivate a keen eye for identifying the essence of diseases and a gentle heart for treating patients, and create a bright and highly transparent workplace where young people can play an active and vibrant role. I want to create a bright and transparent workplace where young people can thrive.
The Triple Helix of Clinical,
Research and Education Missions
The first mission is medical care. Our mission is to support dermatological care not only in Kobe City, but also in Hyogo Prefecture. We treat all kinds of dermatological diseases, ranging from common diseases to acute diseases, cancer, intractable diseases, and various rare diseases, and support patients’ lives together with patients and their families. We will provide medical care that cares for each patient in cooperation with doctors, nurses and various medical staff of the University Hospital. We aim to provide the most advanced medical care, diagnosis and treatment by combining basic and clinical medicine through basic and clinical research.
Next is “research”. What is most important in research is a mind filled with wonder, the ability to ask questions, and the curiosity to unravel the mystery. Why is this rash only on one part of the body? Why is this rash round? Starting with such simple questions, we explore the mechanism by which rashes form and approach the mechanism of disease. I will promote basic research to elucidate the mechanism of the skin organ and clinical research to elucidate the mechanism of disease and link it to treatment.
Finally, education. Education is our future. Dermatology encompasses a broad field of diagnosis, examination, pathology, treatment and surgery. The skin is a complex organ that includes the epidermis, dermis, appendages, subcutaneous tissue with blood vessels and nerves, immune cells, and adipose tissue. After five years of learning about a variety of skin diseases and their treatment, dermatology residents can develop a clinical eye that allows them to treat patients.
The triple helix of clinical, research, and education cannot be achieved by one person. What is important is the connection between people. We will strive to advance medicine and medical care by connecting people, including patients, medical students, first-year residents, colleagues in the department, medical staff, physicians in the community and at other institutions and universities, and physicians in the field of basic science. All of us in the department look forward to meeting you.
