Division of Dermatology (Prof. Chikako Nishigori)
Our department is one of the most famous therapeutic centers s of photo-medicine in Japan. Many patients with photosensitive disorders including xeroderma pigmentosum are referred to us from all over Japan. In the remedy aspect, we give priority to malignant skin tumors, and provide effective and feasible cure including gSentinel lymph node biopsy of malignant melanomah (approved as the advanced medical technology) and gPhotodynamic therapyh. In the research aspect, we energetically make studies on photosensitive disorders, allergic skin diseases and cutaneous malignant tumors, and present a fruitful research achievements.

Division of Clinical Pathology and Immunology
Section of Clinical Laboratory Medicine (Prof. Shunichi Kumagai)
The goal of our research is to elucidate the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Sjogrenfs syndrome (SS), and to develop new treatments for the diseases. We focus on the role of oxidative stress in autoimmune diseases. We aim to develop new treatments for autoimmune diseases by regulating epigenetic alterations (histone acetylation, micro RNA expression) and by modulating the functions of cell surface molecules (PD-1-PD-1L interaction, outside-in integrin signal transduction).

The main goal of our department is to establish "Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine",the laboratory medicine based upon scientific evidences . We also aim to develop new diagnostic tests for collagenvasucluar diseases.
Our current focuses are;
1.To evaluate the usefulness and utilities of the laboratory tests such as anti-CCP antibody in evidence based medicine framework, using our specialty skills for new statistical method. Especially, we are specialized in systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
2.To play an critical part in the clinical research of Kobe University for biostatistical methodology and clinical study designing. We contribute to the various phases of the clinical research from preclinical phase to trials for clinical applications.
3.The development of the new laboratory tests focused on the transcription factors.
