Dean, Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine/ School of Medicine@@@ Yoshimi Takai, MD, PhD |
| Medicine and medical care have crucially important roles in the health and quality of life not just for those living in Japan, but also for people worldwide. Looking ahead to the future of medicine and medical care, Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine/School of Medicine
has taken up the challenge to establish a unique center of excellence for medical research and education. Our goal is to become one of the best medical schools in Japan and achieve worldwide recognition. To achieve this, we have invited top class biomedical scientists and clinicians from across the nation. We are now systematically focusing our activities related to education, medical and life science research, and medical care. We have also proactively introduced innovative systems in our postgraduate courses, including a program that fuses basic and clinical medicine. We have done this ahead of other Japanese universities, so that we can cultivate our top class human resources that will be leaders in tomorrow's medical sciences and medical care. To enhance our regional partnerships with medical institutions and hospitals in the city of Kobe and Hyogo Prefecture, we continue to improve the environment for education, research, and medical care that will help facilitate our students, young investigators, and medical doctors. We are developing an integrated and organized team that reflects humanity and answers the future needs of our community. We have taken advantage of the characteristics of Kobe as being a traditional but cosmopolitan city; one with many international students and medical parishioners and researchers active on the world stage, to promote greater international collaboration. We have launched a research project focused on the emergent/re-emergent infectious diseases that now threaten cities worldwide. Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine has an outstanding reputation overseas as well as in Japan for its long list of world-class accomplishments in the field of signal transduction research. It is also highly respected for its education of many highly capable basic medical scientists. Based on these achievements, our medical and life science research focuses on "biomembranes", which are essential for living organisms. This research aims to elucidate the mechanisms of signal transduction systems and the relationship between the abnormalities of these systems and diseases. Our clinical research is looking for a common mechanism that might lie behind the onset and development of cancer, lifestyle-related disorders such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases, and neurological disorders. As well studies focus on individual diseases. Our goal is to establish a new paradigm for diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to these diseases by clarifying a picture of a common mechanism. Patient-centered medical care is the first priority at Kobe University Hospital. The Hospital has made great effort improving the level of patient service to make it highly trusted in the vicinities. The general mission of the university hospital is the delivery of safe, high-level medical care. We have recently set up departments of clinical oncology and radiation oncology to adjust to compartmentalized medical care. We have consequently strengthened an interdisciplinary medical approach for cancer treatment. We have also expanded interdisciplinary medical practices to areas such as infectious diseases and lifestyle-related disorders. The appointment of a chief nurse as vice president, the first such appointment, has yielded many benefits in the provision of patient service as a nursing standpoint is taken more into consideration. A number of patients from abroad as well as from Japan have been admitted for care. For the level of medical research and care that we aim for, it is vital that those involved have adequate knowledge and skills as well as a well-rounded character, a social nature, deep insights, and high ethical standards. We recognize that in addition to regular medical education, our mission involves fostering and nurturing the high level of human resources that will be needed for the development of medicine and medical care of the future. Given the unique environment for education, research and medical care at the Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine/School of Medicine, these personnel will have acquired the custom of comprehensive deliberation that considers all standpoints. We welcome applications from high school students who wish to pursue medical careers and from undergraduate/graduate students who wish to continue or advance their medical research. We very much look forward to you joining us with the aim of becoming top medical scientists and doctors at Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine/School of Medicine. We are also open to applications from young investigators, medical doctors, and nurses at the beginning of their career in medicine and the life sciences. We are looking for well motivated people with high aspirations, those seeking to face the challenge of world-leading research in the medical and life sciences that can be applied to medical education and clinical practice.
