History of Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine/Faculty of Medicine 1868 April Hospital Section set in Kobe Foreign Public Office to prepare for the construction of the hospital. 1869 Apr. Kobe Hospital was established. The training center for medical practitioners (called Igaku-Denshyujo) was attached to Kobe Hospital. 1886 Igaku-Densyujyo was renamed as the Medical School attached to Kobe Hospital. 1877 Feb. Kobe Hospital was renamed as Public Kobe Hospital. 1892 Apr. Prefectural Kobe Medical School was established. 1892 Dec. Public Kobe Hospital was renamed as Prefectural Kobe Hospital. 1983 Apr. Pharmaceutical School attached to Prefectural Kobe Hospital was established. 1984 Feb Pharmaceutical School attached to Kobe Prefectural Medical School was renamed as Prefectural Pharmacutical School. 1988 Mar. Prefectural Medical School and Hyogo Prefectural Pharmacutical School were both closed. 1944 Apr. Prefectural Technical College of Medicine was founded. Hyogo Prefectural Kobe Hospital was renamed as the Hospital affiliated with Hyogo Prefectural Technical College of Medicine. 1946 Apr. Hyogo Prefectural College of Medicine was established (19 departments, 80 admitted students). 1949 Apr. Nursing School attached to Hyogo Prefectural College of Medicine was established. 1951 Mar. Hyogo Prefectural Technical College of Medicine and Prefectural Premedical School were both closed due to the educational system reform. 1952 Feb. Kobe Medical College was founded. The Hospital affiliated with Hyogo Prefectural Technical College of Medicine was renamed as the Hospital affiliated with Kobe Medical College. 1952 Apr. The opening ceremony to establish of Kobe Medical College was held. 1953 Apr. Institute of Forensic Science attached to Kobe Medical College was renamed as Institute of Forensic Medicine Research. Department of Physiology (Division II) and Department of Psychiatry were established. The doctoral course under the old education system was founded. 1954 Apr. Department of Pathology (Division II) and Department of Orthopediatrics were established. 1955 Jan. The Pre-medical Course was established in Hyogo Agricultural University and Himeji Institute of Technology was established. 1955 Apr. Department of Anatomy (Division II) was established. 1961 Apr. Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine was closed. Instead, Department of Hygiene and Department of Public Health were established. 1961 Sep. Institute of Forensic Medicine and others were combined into the Research Institute affiliated with Kobe Prefectural College of Medicine. 1958 Mar. Post-graduate course (Ph. D.) under the new educational system was established in Kobe Medical College. 1958 Dec. The main building was constructed. 1959 Apr. The Health Science Course was added to the Nursing Institute attached to Kobe Medical College, which was subsequently renamed as the Prefectural Woman's Institute of Welfare. 1960 May The Research Institute was renamed as the Institute of Growth Mechanisms. 1961 Mar. Kobe Medical College and its doctoral course (old education system) were closed. 1962 Apr. Department of Dermatology and Urology was closed. Instead, Department of Dermatology and Department of Urology were established. 1962 Jul. The building of the College Library was constructed (ca, 1460 m2). 1963 May The building of the Center for Experimental Animals was built (ca. 700 m2). 1963 Dec. The cabinet meeting decided to transfer Kobe Medical College to the national university in the fiscal year 1963. 1964 Apr. Kobe University School of Medical was established in Kobe university. All of the premedical students, the 1st-year students, and 10 departments of the Basic Medical Sciences were transferred from Kobe Medical College to Kobe University School of Medicine. 1965 Jan. Department of Occupational Health was closed, and Department of Medical Zoology was established. 1965 Apr. Three departments of basic medical sciences, and 5 departments of Clinical Sciences were transferred from Kobe Medical College to Kobe University School of Medicine in the 2nd fiscal year. 1966 Apr. Five departments of the Clinical Sciences were transferred from Kobe Medical College to Kobe University School of Medicine. 1967 Apr. The doctoral course attached to Kobe Medical College, 3 departments of the Clinical Sciences and the College Library were transferred from Hyogo Prefecture to Kobe University. 1967 Jun. In association with the national transfer of Kobe Medical College, the College Hospital and the Prefectural Women's School of Welfare attached to the College were renamed as the Hospital and the School of Nursing attached to Kobe University School of Medicine. Department of Anestheology was established. 1968 Mar. Kobe Medical College and its doctoral course were closed. 1968 Apr. One hundred students were to be admitted for the Medical School. 1969 Mar. The building for the Central Research Laboratory was constructed. 1969 Apr. The Department of the Internal Medicine (Division III) and Department of Neurosurgery were established. The School of Medical Technology attached to the Kobe University School of Medicine was established (20 admitted students). 1972 Apr. The School of Public Health Laboratory Technology was renamed as the School of Medical Technology. 1973 Mar. The School of Public Health Laboratory Technology was closed. 1973 Apr. Department of Biochemistry was renamed as the Department of Biochemistry (Division I). The Department of Biochemistry (Division II) and Department of Radiation Biophysics were established. Institute for Experimental Animals was established. One hundred twenty undergraduate students were to be admitted, and 54 doctoral course students were to be admitted. Institute for Experimental Animals affiliated with Kobe University School of Medicine was established. 1976 Feb. The first term of construction of the Building of Medical Sciences was finished. 1977 Mar. The second term of construction of the Building of Medical Sciences was finished. 1978 Aug. The Nursing School and the School of Medical Technology were moved to the Myodani Campus. 1979 Mar. The 3rd term of construction of the Building of Medical Sciences was finished. 1979 Apr. International Center for Medical Research (ICMR), affiliated with Kobe University School of Medicine, was established. Department of Oral Surgery was established. 1981 Oct. The School of Allied Medical Sciences affiliated with Kobe University was established. 1984 Apr. The Nursing School affiliated with Kobe Medical College was abolished. 1985 Apr. The School of Medical Technology was closed. Department of Clinical Examination was established. 1988 Apr. Department of Internal and Generic Medicine was established. 1989 Apr. One hundred students were allowed to be admitted for Kobe University School of Medicine. 1991 Apr. Administrative Office of University Hospital was integrated into Administrative Office of School of Medicine (General Affairs Division, Planning and Administrative Division, Student Affairs Division, Medical Affairs Division). 1996 Dec Faculty of Health Sciences affiliated with Kobe University School of Medicine was established (160 admitted students) 1996 Apr. Department of Disaster and Emergency Medicine was established. 1996 Jun. The building of Administrative Office was constructed. 1998 Mar. School of Allied Medical Sciences, Kobe University, was closed. 1998 Apr. The number of admission to Faculty of Medicine became 95. The new examination system for Bachelors, who were transferred into the 3rd year, began (5 admitted students). 1998 Jun. The Clinical Research Building was constructed. The building of Faculty of Health Sciences was constructed. 1999 Apr. The master course (Health Sciences) was established in. Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine 2000 Apr. Department of Synchrotron Radiation Research was set up in Department of Internal Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine. 2001 Feb. The construction of Shinryoku Hall finished. 2001 Apr Kobe University Graduate School of Health Sciences (doctor course) was established. Five Majors were reestablished in Graduate School of Medicine. Thirty-five divisions of Kobe University School of Medicine were abolished, and 4 groups of majors were established. Department of Imaging Medicine and Ion Beam Therapy was established. 2002 Apr. The master course (Biomedical Science), Kobe University Graduate School, was established (20 admitted students). 2004 Apr. Kobe University was incorporated in accordance with the Japanese government's National University Corporation Bill. The International Center for Medical Research was reformed as the International Center for the Medical Research and Treatment. The system of the Administration Office was reformed. Department of Clinical Evaluation of Pharmacotherapy and Department of Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine were newly added to Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine. 2006 Jan. Division of General Practice and Community Medicine, affiliated with Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine, was established. 2007 Apr. Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine (Medical Sciences) was reorganized into two major fields: Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences. The field of Basic Medical Sciences consisted of Dept. of Physiology and Cell Biology, Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dept. of Pathology and Microbiology and Dept. of Social Medicine. 2008 Apr. In association with establishment of Kobe University Graduate School of Health Sciences, the system of Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine was reorganized into Dept. of Physiology and Cell Biology, Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dept. of Internal Medicine, Dept. of Internal Medicine Related, Dept. of Surgery, Dept. of Surgery Related were established. Division of Infection Disease Field Research, Division of System Biology of Pathology, Section of Child Health and Development, and Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery were established. Kobe University Graduate School of Health Sciences was established. 2008 Jun. Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, was added to Kobe Graduate School of Medicine.
